My hula hooping adventures began early on in life when I attended kindergarten in Soviet Russia. We were all taught how to hula hoop during our daily physical education classes.

In my home growing up, there were three girls, and there was always a hula hoop, which I started using when I was in college at about 16 or 17 years old.

My self-care challenge 2020 is to do a hula hoop workout at least 3-4 times a week for about 45 minutes. This year, we as a country and the entire world experienced a lot of adversity: the Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic, the racial conflicts and violent protests accompanied by curfews enforced across many states, and skyrocketing rates of unemployment. I’ve coped by deleting social media apps off of my iPhone and increasing my self-care time as well as activities every day.

When hula hooping, I either talk on the phone to catch up with a friend or read a book. Typically, I hula hoop outside, on the river, so there’s a lot of beauty to enjoy if I’m listening to an audiobook, podcast, or an educational interview.

Once she figured it out, she bought a hula hoop and began her journey to fun-filled fitness!
