I decided to take a risk and see what the builtins looked like with a black background.Black and White Builtins with Black BackgroundI can be al little indecisive from time to time, but one thing I am excited about is the decision to do something a little different and take this risk.

With the black background, I needed to use lighter colored pieces, anything too dark would get lost.I didn’t want to jump right in and paint the backs of the builtins black.

Modern Built-in StylingIt feels so much cozier in here now and I really love how the black changed the look of the builtins.

I looked and looked for the perfect way to make a THIN 1.5 inch floating shelf, and liked the ideas from Young House Love’s tutorial.Here’s what lumber you’ll need:1×2 common board: cut to length of shelf, also cut 2 support cleats (one for each wall).

Upper Cabinets Made into Built

First, instead of starting shelves and cabinets from scratch, we purchased basic stock, unfinished cabinets from Lowes.You could easily find used cabinets in good condition on Facebook Marketplace or your local ReStore as well!For our space, we purchased two 30×30 upper cabinets as well as two 36×30 cabinets.Since the upper cabinets are 12′ deep we also put a 1×3 in the back so the 1×12 would create a small overhang on the cabinets to give it a finished look.
