Strand Design in collaboration with Str8 Modern, has completed the remodel of a mid-century modern home in Golden Valley, Minnesota.A folding glass wall opens the living room to a wood deck that extends the available living space.Adjacent to the dining room is the kitchen, which enjoys the other side of the fireplace.

Tucked away behind a door between the dining room and kitchen is one of the bedrooms.

A St. Louis Vintage Store Owner Transforms Her Own Mid Century

BEFORE: The living room features a wall of windows that provide tons of natural light, highlighting the dark-lava-rock fireplace and glimmering copper hood.AFTER: Anna retained the windows, lava-rock cladding, and copper hood but painted the window frames black.On the exterior, two major changes were carried out, including repainting the red brick and the wood paneling.“It’s a bit sacrilegious to paint a brick home here in St Louis, and I’m sure some neighbors aren’t thrilled, but I’m really happy with how it turned out,” admits Anna.

When that plan went awry, they went to a local artisan who created and installed a patinated copper cladding with vertical fluting and a starburst pattern around the doorknob: “It turned out amazing,” glows Anna.

The interior is light and inviting, with super stylish modern and mid-century furniture.

While much of the home required basic renovations such as new paint and flooring, Davis knew the kitchen and dining room space would need more than fresh finishes.The original floor plan separated the dining room and kitchen into separate rooms and featured large but awkward pantries.

In the kitchen, the original finishes included a lot of wood: brown wood cabinetry over magnolia-wood paneled walls and white wood paneling across the ceilings.

Between the top cabinets and the counter tops on the outer wall, there was a row of windows that provided some natural light, but inefficiently.

By opening up the space and adding skylights overhead, the kitchen is even brighter than the original.

Originally built as a holiday home, the owners’ required additional living space but not at the expense of the detail and character of the original.The original holiday home, designed by Peter Fawns in 1966, possesses the traits of well-planned and efficient homes that were typical of the Small Homes Service.The house was remarkably intact and little changed over time with the exception of a bathroom upgrade.

The most important component of the brief however was that the original house should be altered as little as possible.

Faced with a “remuddled” kitchen from one decade, a haphazard bedroom / family room addition from another, and an otherwise disjointed and generally run-down mid-century modern house, the owners asked Klopf Architecture and Envision Landscape Studio to re-imagine this house and property as a unified, flowing, sophisticated, warm, modern indoor / outdoor living space for a family of five.The master bathroom has high windows all along one wall to bring in light, and a large wet room area for the shower and tub.

Located in Lafayette, CA this remodeled single-family house is 3,363 square foot, 4 bedroom, and 3.5 bathroom.

Adding a main level addition with the existing U-shaped plan left limited options with the house’s location on a steep hillside.The existing home featured low and sleek rooflines with large, thin gables, making a second level addition a challenging design problem.

Flipping Out” Star Jeff Lewis Lists Renovated Farmhouse-Style Home

Real estate aficionado and star of the Bravo reality show Flipping Out Jeff Lewis recently listed a home in the Beverly Hills Post Office neighborhood for $3.495 million, just two years after he bought it for $1.37 million.During his ownership, Lewis made significant changes to the 1950s property, starting with expanding it from a not-quite-2,000-square-foot split-level to a 2,870-square-foot modern farmhouse-style dwelling.
