BEFORE: The living room features a wall of windows that provide tons of natural light, highlighting the dark-lava-rock fireplace and glimmering copper hood.AFTER: Anna retained the windows, lava-rock cladding, and copper hood but painted the window frames black. On the exterior, two major changes were carried out, including repainting the red brick and the wood paneling.“It’s a bit sacrilegious to paint a brick home here in St Louis, and I’m sure some neighbors aren’t thrilled, but I’m really happy with how it turned out,” admits Anna.

When that plan went awry, they went to a local artisan who created and installed a patinated copper cladding with vertical fluting and a starburst pattern around the doorknob: “It turned out amazing,” glows Anna.

Mid-Century Interiors: 3 Characteristics

When it comes to mid-century modern design, the lifestyle and interiors of the house are often what complete the story. Here, we explore the defining characteristics of mid-century modern design in the broadest sense, and then take a closer look at how each of these characteristics is embodied in the design of the interior.

Mid-Century Interiors: 3 Characteristics
What is Mid-Century Modern Design?Although built in the 1950s, the Kingsland residence in its original state did not embody the characteristics of mid-century modern design.Connected, Through and ThroughWhen it comes to thinking about mid-century modern design and architecture, cohesiveness is probably one of the most important qualities to keep in mind.

Stylish Mid

This project was a thorough remodel of a 1950s house by prominent Portland architect Saul Zaik. The architect thoroughly reworked the interior floor plan, relocating the master bedroom and bathroom to the rear of the house, creating a mudroom, office, and laundry room, changing the proportions of a family room that had been expanded and was out of scale with the other rooms, upgrading the windows throughout, and vaulting the ceilings in the addition.

Stylish Mid
The interior is light and inviting, with super stylish modern and mid-century furniture.

Lots of warm-colored, almost orange wood and patterned textiles all over make the interiors very cozy.2 of 14 of 143 of 14 of 144 of 14 of 145 of 14 of 146 of 14 of 147 of 14 of 148 of 14 of 149 of 14 of 1410 of 14 of 1411 of 14 of 1412 of 14 of 1413 of 14 of 1414 of 14 of 14Source: desiretoinspire, zaik

Mid Century Re-Modern by HMH Architecture + Interiors Out of all the homes on this list, this was the one that was the biggest “AH HA” moment.

I found this when I was still trying to have a two story modern house (because two stories are cheaper than one) and when I saw this it was the perfect bridge from that modern house to the mid century one I ended up with.

A Few Reasons to Buy or Keep a Mid-Century Home

In this day and age, building materials, labor and just about everything seems to be raising in cost.Your style taste can always update the interior, so here are a few reasons to buy or keep a Mid-century home.

Pitched roofs are the roofs that range from a slight to drastic slope.

It is also normal for the homes to have doors on opposing walls to create air flow through rooms or the house has whole house fans that help create air flow!

Building materials have come a long way since then.

Modern kitchen makeover has natural light as its centerpiece

While much of the home required basic renovations such as new paint and flooring, Davis knew the kitchen and dining room space would need more than fresh finishes. The original floor plan separated the dining room and kitchen into separate rooms and featured large but awkward pantries.

In the kitchen, the original finishes included a lot of wood: brown wood cabinetry over magnolia-wood paneled walls and white wood paneling across the ceilings.

Between the top cabinets and the counter tops on the outer wall, there was a row of windows that provided some natural light, but inefficiently.

By opening up the space and adding skylights overhead, the kitchen is even brighter than the original.

A Midcentury Holiday Home Undergoes Modern Upgrade

Originally built as a holiday home, the owners’ required additional living space but not at the expense of the detail and character of the original. The original holiday home, designed by Peter Fawns in 1966, possesses the traits of well-planned and efficient homes that were typical of the Small Homes Service. The house was remarkably intact and little changed over time with the exception of a bathroom upgrade.

The most important component of the brief however was that the original house should be altered as little as possible.

The assumption was the kitchen would be upgraded in its existing location with living space added to the east.

Klopf Architecture in collaboration with Envision Landscape Studio have completed this mid-century modern house in Lafayette, California, USA.The owners of this property had been away from the Bay Area for many years, and looked forward to returning to an elegant mid-century modern house.

Faced with a “remuddled” kitchen from one decade, a haphazard bedroom / family room addition from another, and an otherwise disjointed and generally run-down mid-century modern house, the owners asked Klopf Architecture and Envision Landscape Studio to re-imagine this house and property as a unified, flowing, sophisticated, warm, modern indoor / outdoor living space for a family of five. The master bathroom has high windows all along one wall to bring in light, and a large wet room area for the shower and tub.

Located in Lafayette, CA this remodeled single-family house is 3,363 square foot, 4 bedroom, and 3.5 bathroom.
