Finding The Perfect Leather Sofa
The perfect leather sofa can be wonderfully masculine and sophisticated. And because finding the one can feel like a huge investment, it’s important to choose wisely.I personally love a rich, camel leather but there are so many gorgeous choices out there, it’s hard to go wrong.Just remember to stay away from sheen or shine as it can take it from classy to cheesy real quick.(images via A House In The Hills, Sincerely Jules, West Elm, Apartment 34, Homey Oh My, Old Brand New Blog, CM Studio, Apartment Therapy, Sight Unseen, Bryght, JKF.nl & Emma O’Meara)
It's Here, The Leather Sofa
My leather sofa has been here for two weeks and I haven’t even had time to think about it, much less write about it.We moved the white sofa into the front room “just to see” and then lived with this goldish sofa in our foyer for a week.Leather looks better and more wonderful with age, cloth looks, well, older with age.Imperfect, lived-in leather is actually even better than brand new leather.Right now my downstairs looks like a sofa store, but it’s SO inviting!
Distressed Coffee Table (a revisit & rework)
Anyhoo, one of the most asked about projects from the past is my distressed coffee table makeover (from way back in 2011).Just in case you’re new here and are wondering, I originally picked this table up from eBay for around $25.After cleaning away any sanding residue, I applied two coats (with drying time between, of course) of standard acrylic wall paint using a brush.Play with sanding directions and depths, inspecting your progress from time to time, until you have achieved the look you’re after. What was originally a rather plain table is now perfectly at home in my cottagey style living room.

Working With: Leather Furniture
I’ve had a few requests to do a “working with what you have” post about leather furniture. It’s a good topic because I’ve noticed that those that have leather living room furniture usually have more than one piece (i.e., the full matching set) and often feel like they’re drowning in a sea of brown.I personally think the magic formula to making a room feel fresh instead of weighed down is to lighten up everything else around it so that the leather becomes the element that warms up the room.Too many wood tones can add to the “brown effect.” I also love the contrast of leather and fresh white. If white walls feel like a risk for you, here are a few examples to help you envision the look:Emily Hendersonsourcesource unknownThe Painted Hivesource unknown

Design Dilemma: What to Hang On the Big Wall Behind Your Sofa
A reader recently sent me pictures of this apartment that’s she’s renting and the vast space above her sofa that’s calling for art.One of the biggest mistakes I see is hanging something that’s too small and actually makes the wall look more awkward.I’m not always the biggest fan of placing a sofa against a wall anyway, but sometimes there’s no other choice. Before you start hanging things on the wall, think about all of your furniture arrangement options. When it comes to art, think big!
