Black and White Downstairs Guest Bathroom The House in the Woods
I started working with my client at The House in the Woods a few months ago. When I first saw the House in the Woods, I saw a ton of potential. It was your run of the mill early 2000’s decorating and design, and the vision we had to update it was to create an MCM-influenced modern black and white downstairs guest bathroom. We picked a black hexagon tile for the floor with black grout, and a white beveled subway wall tile for contrast. We wanted it to look clean and upscale in our black and white downstairs guest bathroom.

How to lay big hexagon tile!: Week 3 of the One Room Challenge
How to lay big hexagon tile!: Week 3 of the One Room ChallengeHow to lay big hexagon tileYou will need:Instructions:Using a hand-sketch of the bathroom layout, we created an Illustrator base that is to scale, so 63" by 80".Almost all the bathrooms they were inspired by featured black or grey 5-8" hexagons!I had never laid large hex tile before--I've done mosaic hexagon tile, big squares, and subway tile--but I knew we could do it!I did some googling on this and it seems there is a serious lack of tutorials for how to lay large hexagon tiles! Also, with this one we can do two rows cut approximately in half, at the tub and door wall.
I used this dry lay to also take the tile nippers out and make all my cuts.I left the heater on at a more reasonable 70°F temperature to keep the tile and thinset warm enough to set fully overnight.I debated white, grey, and black grout options, but ultimately, picked up a gallon of the charcoal which is the black Fusion Pro option.Once I actually started grouting, the grout looked more black.Sure there was still some grout haze on the tile, but I would get that after the grout and tile set fully.
Traditional home modernized with style
Nestled in beautiful downtown Coeur d’Alene, this professional building used to be an older family home. With a complete makeover and some professional help, it’s now reflecting the original style and character of the home it used to be and what surrounds it.This beautifully designed craftsman styled kitchen fits perfectly with the style in downtown Coeur d’Alene. It features clean lines of white 4×16 subway tile and a 5/8 inch mosaic border that bands the entire room as a wainscoting. On the floor are classic 1″ hexagon mosaic tiles with a dark pewter grout so the pattern really stands out.
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of Grouting
And that include everything...The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.I then measure out the five pounds of dry grout into one of the two gallon buckets. Finally, I pour all of the admix liquid into the empty two gallon bucket and begin mixing in the dry grout a little at a time. One can continuously mix the grout while the other slowly pours the dry grout into the bucket mixture.I have no shame, and this is about as ugly as it gets when it comes to grouting.
), I spent my extended weekend grouting and sponging, grouting and sponging. In total, I think I grouted 150 square feet of tile lines. This is best for skinny grout lines.I love old bathrooms with the dark grout lines in the floor, so I used a darker color – Light Pewter – for the floor grout.Although it’s an optional step with darker grout colors, I have decided to go the extra step and seal all of the grout lines with a penetrating grout sealer.
