Every year, I wrap green Christmas garland around our stair railings.Wrap the garland around the bottom of the railings.I’d say the garland as shown above is creeping a bit into the area where you’d walk on the stairs.

Keep the garland close to the railings, so the steps are free of garland.

You could even let the garland spill over the open side of the stairs as a decorative display, keeping the steps clear.

Inexpensive DIY Christmas Garland

Last Christmas, I went shopping for garland to decorate the stairs in my foyer.So I went to JoAnn’s and found plain garland, pinecones, ornaments and 2.5″ wide ribbon.If you’re using ornaments with detachable tops, I would glue the tops down before attaching them to the garland so the ornaments won’t pop off.I simply tied the ribbon off at one end of the garland, then loosely wound it around the garland, and tied it off at the other end.

At one end, wrap one zip tie around both the garland and the banister at the bottom of the stairway.Repeat that process at the top of the banister with the other end of the garland, leaving the center of the garland hanging.Find the center point of the garland and tie that to the middle of the banister with another zip tie.Approximately four inches away from the zip tie, wrap the wire (or twisty tie) around the garland securely in place.
