How To Furnish An L Shaped Living Room

PLEASE help us furnish & decorate our L-Shaped Living & Dining Room

We recently bought a house and aren't sure how to arrange the L-shaped living room / dining room.The furnished pictures are from the previous owners.We're starting with a blank slate, so any and all suggestions related to furniture and walls are welcome.We won't have a TV in the room.

We do, however, want to include an antique secretary and lots of bookshelves in there somewhere.

We are first time homeowners and would love some help with our L-shaped living room and dining room.All feedback is welcome, but I'm especially wondering about the following: 1) is it too matchy matchy with curtains and pillows?

I am on the hunt for a new couch and a pair of chairs, but we're on a craigslist budget right now.

Also, we don't get tons of natural light, so I'd like to find ways to brighten the space, maybe by painting some of the dark furniture white.
