I am having an IKEA kitchen installed and an wrestling with how to accommodate a 24 inch overhang on the island.I have two rows of back to back 24-inch deep cabinets that total 72 inches wide by 48 inches deep.I'd like to extend the quartz another 24 inches from 48 inches to 72 inches total depth (so island would be square, 72x72).Havent been able to get any info on how to do this (the IKEA installers said they don't do any island supports/posts/legs).Can I just add two wooden posts at the either end of the overhang (also like the picture)?

In order to install the kitchen island completely, it took several additional steps to make sure it was secure.Once the nails were in place in the foundation he added additional liquid nails to the underside of the island.The island was then set into place and additional screws were driven in from the base of the island into the newly installed 2x4s on the cement.

But there are a few items that need to be kept in mind as you plan your kitchen island design:1) Kitchen SizeFirst, you should consider the size of your kitchen.L-shaped kitchen island designs can improve traffic flow by allowing for two ways of entering and exiting the kitchen space.

The nice thing about both the L-shaped and one-wall kitchen island designs is that they allow for counter seating on the non-kitchen side of the island.

You're not alone on an island!

Everyone wants a large island that is a statement piece of the overall design.While a large island, say 4’x10’, sounds amazing, it can be too big for your space.

You need to keep a minimum of 36” of walk space between your island all other cabinets or walls.Are there any appliances that need to open towards the island that will cut off the walk space?Deep drawers are one of the most requested things for a large island.

Island seating overhang

We have 24" base cabinets, a 1.5" overhang, and then seating on the other side.Make the base cabinets 30" deep and leave 16.5" for overhang (the base cabinets are a sink cabinet, trash pullout, and a slim pullout)3.

Build a 2x4 wall behind the base cabinets to eat up that space, and support the top, and leave about 15" overhang4.

Build 6" wide ccbbies behind the base cabinets, opening into the range wall, and put baskets in them.

There is 50" from counter to wall where seating, and the walkway is not that busy.
