The real 'Brady Bunch' house architect and HGTV's 'Very Brady

From ‘Brady’ to ‘Very Brady’: The split-level home in Studio City that served as “The Brady Bunch” house exterior, seen here in 2018, prior to being acquired and remodeled by HGTV.(It wouldn’t be the Brady house if some new eave was poking out from behind the roofline.)

The real 'Brady Bunch' house architect and HGTV's 'Very Brady
It may not look like a stereotypical McMansion (for that you’d have to add infinitely more eaves) but HGTV’s “Brady Bunch” house is now certainly McMansion-scale.(Studiously kept off-camera are the denser apartment and condo buildings that have sprung up off Vineland Avenue, around the corner from the Brady house.)

“A Very Brady Renovation” is time travel to a place of bright nostalgia that never existed.

Home Tour: Inside a Moroccan Modern Home in Palm Springs with

My wife, Amanda Ross, and I were in Palm Springs celebrating the photo shoot of our newly renovated house, which was slated to run in this very magazine in January 2019.In the end, it looked pretty great, with its modern Moroccan take layered onto an old California hacienda frame.Coincidentally, this home had also once appeared on the cover of Western Living—in January 2018, a mere year before ours—and, while it was only two minutes from us in the Mesa neighbourhood of Palm Springs, I had never actually seen it in real life.

Why Millennials Love Mid-Century Modern Homes

Midcentury Modern design gets name-dropped a lot these days, and can be seen everywhere from the Museum of Modern Art to the Target catalog. For Midcentury design , it’s that “midcentury” part that often is ignored, since it’s easy to assume all “modern” design falls into one bucket, which simply isn’t true.

Why Millennials Love Mid-Century Modern Homes
Since the majority of these homes were built in California (famed developer Joseph Eichler built more than 11,000 Mid-Century Modern homes in the state alone), encouraging indoor-outdoor living made sense. As John sees it, the number of Midcentury Modern homes being built tapered out in the ‘70s because people simply lost interest.John guesses that people who had grown up in or around Midcentury Modern homes were reaching adulthood and buying more of the homes because they associated some nostalgia with them.
