Mid Century Modern Furniture Makeovers Done Right

It’s been a few years now since the popularity of Mid Century Modern furniture pieces began to grow.In case you’re not familiar with mid century modern furniture, let me give you a quick primer.Mid century modern (or MCM) refers to a style of pieces from the 50’s and 60’s (hence the term “mid century”) that have clean lines, sleek finishes, and that space-age feel.

Painting a mid century modern piece can be a little tricky.To prep for this project, I’ve been looking a lot online at other painted mid century pieces that I think have been done really well.

Last week, I showed you this Mid Century Modern chest of drawers I found on Craigslist.I hate when my kids use that word, but this situation perfectly fits it)Why he didn’t tell us he would be selling it too, I’ll never know, but we went back on the road again to pick up this classic Mid Century Bassett piece.

My typical makeover for these mid century damaged cabinets is a white semi-gloss like I’ve used HERE and HERE.

I have an absolutely beautiful piece of furniture to share with you today and I can’t wait to show you this mid century modern dresser redo.The picture really doesn’t do this piece justice, it had some of the best craftsmanship on any dresser I’ve owned.This was definitely mid century and totally my retro modern style.

Mid-Century Modern Dresser Makeover

I really could go on and on, but what I really want to focus on is this dresser.I love love love the legs on this dresser and wanted to draw attention to them, so I knew exactly what direction I was headed.Just brush it on, distress (or leave full-coverage) to your liking and seal with furniture wax.

Mixing the clear wax into the dark makes the dark wax a bit more forgiving- you can adjust the darkness as necessary.Slapping on the dark wax by itself would be way too overwhelming and would be difficult to get a non-streaky look.

Mid-Century Modern Dresser Needs Help

I am a sucker for the lines of this dresser.Even though it had ugly laminate, was dirty and the hardware was rusty, I know it’s got potential.The good news is I didn’t fret over painting this guy because of the laminate, but I loved the etchings in the top drawers and the bottom.

So, I knew Aubusson would be my color, I just needed to polish up the brass.To achieve this shiny, undistressed, mid-century modern finish, I started off like I normally do.After the second coat it got a little better and after the third coat it had a nice glossy sheen.I really love the deep teal color of Aubusson and the over-all look of this mid-century modern dresser!Hopefully you can feel a little more confident that Chalk Paint CAN be used to achieve a modern look!

Painting Mid Century Modern Furniture White & Metallic Gold

Don't want to get metallic gold paint on the white legs.The mid century modern sewing cabinet looked okay but it didn’t feel right.The white paint was too blah or too flat or too one-dimensional (photo taken before painting the metal feet).

I used a dry-brush technique and dabbed the gold paint around all the sides and raised edges.

The spray painted metallic gold feet were enough.

DIY It

But I was when out thrifting a few weeks ago, I found this $20 mid century inspired double top side table and just had to get it.Let dry then come back and spray the sides, and legs with the white gloss spray paint.Once the spray paint is dry, use your angled brush to paint the top of the table with your latex paint.Just spray with the primer, paint with either spray paint or latex paint, and then seal with the shellac spray.They also have paint on shellac, but I prefer the look and ease of the spray shellac.
