I’m SO excited to finally share our DIY Ikea billy bookcase built in shelving with you all!It’s hardly a DIY – we didn’t do anything custom to these shelves they are simply Ikea Billy bookcases put together in away that creates somewhat of a built-in look.

It’s just crazy how these super simple Ikea Billy Bookcases have totally transformed our space.

We have a long wall that spans the width of our house where our family + dining area is and these Ikea Billy bookcases really help define the two spaces.I haven’t even embarked on organizing the storage yet, but there’s so much that its not even halfway full right now!

IKEA Billy Bookcase Built-In Hack -

IKEA Billy Bookcase Built-In HackHere’s the story…There are all kinds of styles and ideas out there for built-ins.In the tutorials I found online many people used the IKEA Billy bookcases.Just an FYI, the cabinets are 12 inches deep and the IKEA shelves are 11 inches deep but the difference didn’t bother me.

Then we used pocket screws to screw them into the IKEA bookcases, lining then up so the shelves are straight across.We didn’t actually paint the IKEA shelves and found the whites to match almost identically.

DIY Faux "Built

To be completely honest, I don’t know why it took me so long because I have been so excited to share this IKEA hack with Billy bookcases with y’all!I started researching Pinterest and found that people were IKEA hacking entertainment centers.

I’m no stranger to IKEA hacks (see IKEA RAST hack), but this was definitely a larger scale project than what I had tried before.We had it ordered and shipped to us because we didn’t have a car large enough to get it from our local IKEA.

The next day, my dad came over and helped me with mounting it onto the wall and screwing everything together.

How to Turn Billy Bookcases into Built Ins

I finished work on turning several Ikea Billy bookcases into built ins nearly a year ago now.One of the most important steps in turning Billy bookcases into built ins that look and function like built ins done from scratch is anchoring them to the walls and/or ceiling.

Not finished but well on my way to turning these five Billy bookcases into built ins!

And with that my mission of turning Billy bookcases into built ins was complete!

It’s functional, beautiful, and so doable as a DIY when you use Billy bookcases as the base for your built-ins.

BILLY bookcase built-in hack with TV and Playroom Toy Storage

Each bookcase is 80cm, so three bookshelves fitted into the space perfectly, with space for a frame around the edge for a bespoke look.For this BILLY bookcase hack to look bespoke, it really does need to be painted well, using a good quality primer and hard wearing paint.

If you can find someone to make made to measure replacement doors, it definitely gives a more bespoke look.Friends and family visiting couldn’t believe it was an Ikea hack, as they really do look like bespoke cabinets.

We also used this opportunity to hide our Apple TV and a power strip sitting on top of our bookcase.We use my Iphone and our Ipads as bluetooth remotes so there is no need to be able to see our Apple TV.To drop our cords through the wall we used the “Flat Screen TV Cord & Cable Power Kit” by Legrand which we picked up from Home Depot for under $20.

We used the second power grommet to cover this hole and then simply ran the power cord to our outlet.

It is wonderful to have the power strip and our Apple Tv out of sight.

Backwards Billy TV Mount in Built

After lots of sketches and combos, and a talk with my construction biz brother about safely reinforcing the TV mount, I came up with this.Now you should have a “wall” for your TV mount on top of the Besta shelf.Your TV mount should screw into this reinforcement, which will be invisible on the “shelf” side of your Billy extension.

This is very important, since the weight of the TV can cause the Billy extensions to topple forward otherwise.I also placed a flat bracket behind the TV to keep the Billy extension backs from bowing.

Our New Home: Tutorial on Our DIY Living Room Built-In Shelves +

I’ve been working on my living room, and I’ve showed you the progress in several locations.The next step is to add lattice moulding to the top of the bookcases in preparation for the crown moulding; if you skip this step your crown molding will not sit flush against the front of the bookshelves.Cutting crown moulding is always tricky; if you think you’re doing it exactly backwards from what you should be doing, then you’re probably doing it right!Unless you want to lose your mind, you should always cut all of the angles from the same continuous piece of crown molding.

You also might not want to cut crown molding with your husband, unless, of course, you never argue.

Built

Assemble 2 Billy bookcases, including adding the height extenders and put them on opposite ends of your project2.This is the part where you can decide how wide you want your unit to be (we used the whole Billy).

Assemble the third Billy, nailing the shelves in place on the sides, as this unit will be mounted horizontally5.With another person, hoist the third Billy horizontally between the height extenders, resting on the Benno tops and ledge that you just installed.Caulk every single gap on the unit, caulk it to the wall, and remember to caulk the crown moulding to the ceiling10.

How to Make a Built
