While watching an episode of Fixer Upper, I saw this style of wainscoting added to a home office area.I decided it would look great on the accent walls in my dining room.I chose two sizes of crown molding at a home improvement store.

I cut 45 degree angles, and then used wood glue to adhere the corners.

It blends all crown molding into the walls seamlessly.

How to make your walls look two feet taller

In our guest bedroom, (lots of details here, here and here), I found the magic combination:Paint your baseboards and crown molding the same color as your walls.You’re visually extending the wall by several inches on both the top and bottom, space which is ordinarily white, instantly tricking your eye into thinking the walls are 8-12 inches taller than normal walls.Add picture frame molding in conjunction with a chair rail.Make sure that the boxes above the chair rail are much taller than those below the chair rail.Here, you’re drawing the eye up, way higher than you’d ordinarily look and creating dimension and contrast well above your eye level.

Is this chair rail/wainscoting outdated?

Getting ready to convert an unused dining room into a home office, and wanted to look modern and efficient.This room was done 17 years ago, and the chair rail and wainscoting to me look dated, as do the two different colors on the wall.Would it be helpful if I took out the trim, put a flat square and simple wainscoting up and then painted the walls the entirely same color, or is this still considered OK?
