Adding a custom back panel to your kitchen island is a great way to elevate your overall kitchen design.For the flip house kitchen, I came up with a custom white oak horizontal plank design with legs.Pairing natural white oak with the quartz waterfall edge countertop on the island created a really nice contrast.Step 2: Add Firring StripsNext, I added some vertical furring strips to the backside of the island using 1x2s.

This gave me something to nail the white oak boards to and also created space for the island outlet wiring.

Adding character to a kitchen island/peninsula

I decided to use bead board paneling for this project, and Lowe’s had a new kind that looked like traditional bead board on steroids.A 4′ x 8′ sheet of traditional bead board paneling ran around $20.

So I attached the bead board to the peninsula, setting it on a ruler to raise it while I hammered.

These will cover the areas where the sections of bead board paneling meet.A suggestion from the “Remodeloholic” post, was to round over the edges of the trim boards, so that once installed, there is an intentional space where the trim boards meet.

How to place island end panels

I'm placing decorative doors on the ends on my island and I'm not sure the cabinet folks got the placement correct.I think it's look best if the doors extend beyond with width of the cabinet to hind the cabinet corners.

But my adjacent doors need to open so the best I could do is bring them flush with the end of the island.

But they are currently spec'd like this drawingWhere they are short 1/4" (std reveal) from the end of the cabinet, separated by (1/4"), and a full inch from end of panel door to face of adjacent door.I think it would look better to bring the door fully flush with the width of the island.
